Do A Good Turn Weekend
Apr 10 – Apr 12 all-day

April 10 – 12 is “Do a Good Turn” weekend.

Girl Scout members (both adults and girls) are encouraged to do something nice for someone else throughout the weekend.

It can be as simple as raking leaves for an elderly neighbor or planting flowers at a church, or as complex as a river clean up or building a playground.

After the weekend, all members are sent a short online survey to share the number of hours served and the type of project completed.

What do landfills and art have in common? The Jackson County Green Energy Park captures methane gas from the old Dillsboro landfill for use as a fuel. It provides process heat for: Blacksmith forges, metal foundry, glassblowing studios, greenhouses, facility heating and pottery kiln. The Jackson County Green Energy Park utilizes clean, renewable energy resources to encourage economic development, provide environmental protection, and offer educational opportunities that together will help lead towards a more sustainable future for western North Carolina. The tour includes a glassblowing demonstration, a walking chat on the GEP’s renewable energy use and history, a visit to our ceramics kiln, and a blacksmithing demonstration when available.

Are you working on an It’s Your Planet – Love It Journey!? Great! From energy efficiency to air quality to food production – this opportunity is a great community connection for you. Tours take just over 1 hour and 30 minutes. Any size troop or group is welcome. Tour size is limited to 20 people per group. Smaller groups will be combined to maximize space. Multiple tour times will be set. Choose your preferred time – 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. If a time is overbooked, we will contact you to arrange for another time.

This same weekend, just over the hill in Sylva, they will be holding their annual downtown street festival celebrating Earth Day, springtime, the mountains and everything local! Everyone is invited to Greening Up the Mountains. Downtown Sylva is less than 3 miles from the Green Energy Park. Many great youth- focused events will be offered at the festival.
