Night Sky Exploration @ Location TBD (most likely off the Blue Ridge Parkway)
Aug 22 @ 8:15 pm – 10:15 pm

When you look up at the night sky, what do you see?  Darkness, stars, planets, moons, satellites, constellations, galaxies or a speck on your glasses.  Gain an understanding of basic astronomy.  Meet with members of the Astronomy Club of Asheville.  Check out star charts for the current month.   Discover what you can see using a telescope.  Did you know that the August full moon is the largest full moon in 2014?  The Astronomy Club of Asheville has invited Girl Scouts out for an introduction to backyard astronomy.

The club star gazes are open to the public and usually occur twice per month on the Friday night that falls near the Last Quarter and New Moons (unless a holiday interferes.)  Should the Friday night be clouded out, we will use the next night (Saturday) as a backup night.

Dress as warmly as you can especially your head, hands and feet.  They’ve never heard anyone complain about being too warm at a star gaze.  You may want to bring a sit upon, blanket or chair.  Feel free to bring a pair of binoculars if you have them.

Anyone who comes to a star gaze should turn off your car lights as soon as possible, and give a warning before you turn on your lights to leave.  Don’t use a flashlight unless it has a deep red filter over it.  Few things irritate astronomers more than losing their night vision.   It takes at least 15 minutes to get it back, longer if the person was observing very dim objects such as faint galaxies.  If you bring a flashlight, it MUST have several layers of red cellophane covering the light.

Girls must be accompanied by adults, either troop leadership or parent/guardian.  For last minute location updates and tons of useful resources, check out www.astroasheville.org.
