Small Craft Safety – Canoe (SCS-C) is one of the certifications needed for taking other people on flat water rivers, etc. NOTE: This also counts as Basic Water Rescue for Safety Activity Checkpoints requirements for fishing, watchers, etc.

In order to earn these cards, you must attend all sessions of the class, pass a swim test and pass both the written tests and the skill tests.

Water Test: 1) tread water or float for 1 minute without a life jacket; 2) swim any stroke for 25 yards without a life jacket; 3) swim any stroke for 25 yards while wearing a life jacket.

ADULT FEE: Girl Scout $40; non-Girl Scout $55

BRING: Health History Form – in case of an emergency and P2P training card

FOOD: Lunch, snacks, drinks/bottle water – pack in a small cooler to carry with you to the lake

  • Swimsuit
  • Quick drying shorts, tops for paddling and both warm and quick drying long sleeved tops and bottoms in case we have cool/cloudy/windy weather. Suitable materials include synthetics like polyester, polypropylene, fleece, CoolMax or nylon. (Not cotton or denim – it chafes and weighs a ton when wet!) The long sleeved shirt and pants are also needed for one of the rescue activities and will get wet.
  • Change of clothes
  • Rain gear – we will not stop class for rain, only lightning
  • Sunscreen and hat!
  • Towel

  • A pair of old shoes or closed toe water shoes to wear while canoeing/swimming – no crocs, sandals or flip-flops.
  • Camp shoes and socks – must be closed-toe shoes – tennis shoes or hiking boots are acceptable.

USEFUL EQUIPMENT: (bring if you have them, but don’t go out and spend money)

  • Knee pads: Anything that will help you stay on your knees for a long time – gardening knee pads, foam pads, softball knee pads.

OPTIONAL ITEMS: (bring them if you think you need them)

  • Sunglasses
  • Strap for glasses
  • Spare glasses if you wear contacts
  • Camera – make sure it can get wet
  • Insect repellent
  • T-shirt and quick drying shorts to wear over swimsuit (reduce chance of sunburn, some people find the life jackets rub)
  • Hat that can get wet (prevent sunburned scalp or ears, scoop up water and dump over your head when you get hot) – or a bandana to soak up water and keep you cool
  • Warm jacket in case it is cold once you get out of the water. Polyester fleece works great for this, since it dries quickly.

OVERNIGHT: (If you choose to spend Friday and/or Saturday nights, you’ll need the following)

  • Sleeping bag and pillow
  • Pajamas (that can be seen in public!)
  • Soap, shampoo, deodorant, towel if you want to shower
  • Food for meals – there is a refrigerator, microwave and stove as well as limited cookware, dishes and utensils

The unit house has mattresses for use on the floor as well as hot showers.
